THE MILL PRESS was incorporated in January 1990. Since making its debut, this publishing house quickly built a conspicuous position for itself with a modest assortment of prestigious works and prize-winning published books. Several more important items for planned publication are still in the study and research stages.
The aim of THE MILL PRESS is to showcase Jamaica’s rich historical heritage with reproductions of rare old books and manuscripts as well as quality productions of new and varied titles. Emphasis is on fine editions be they simple, well designed, inexpensive softcover books or distinctive limited hand-bound leather volumes. The main vocation of this ambitious young publishing house is art, history and biography associated with Jamaica. This includes educational children’s books, poetry, fine art and architectural design books as well as historically oriented cookbooks. Publications include new and old historical documentary and biographical material. THE MILL PRESS is also vitally interested in the preservation of Jamaica’s unique ethnic traditions along with its singular ecology and natural environment.
Behind THE MILL PRESS is the well-known Facey family of Jamaica, its directors being the Honourable Maurice Facey, O.J., Mrs Valerie Facey, Stephen B. Facey and Laura Facey Cooper. Mrs Valerie Facey is the venture’s prime mover, and it is her love of good books and passionate interest in Jamaica’s heritage and natural resources that has inspired the development of this unusual publishing house.
